ABOUT SHELLEY KENIGSBERG
Shelley is a prominent freelance editor, writing mentor and writer who’s worked in publishing for over 30 years. She works in most genres — particularly memoir, biographies, fiction (adult and YA) for a range of clients — many authors publishing with publishing houses and writers doing independent publishing (self publishing). Shelley’s favourite role is as writing mentor/editor and the privilege of working on a diverse and fascinating list of projects. Newer projects include researcher/ ghostwriter on two memoirs.
Shelley began in Australian publishing with Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, then Harper Collins, John Wiley, and Macquarie University. Since 1998, when she created S K Publishing, in Sydney she’s been freelancing as editor, trainer and writing mentor. In 2009, Shelley created Editing in Publishing — week-long writing and editing retreats in… paradisal places! Around Australia and in Bali. They continued until the inevitable rupture that Covid-19 brought. Now, she’s gone online with Writing in Paradise online (12 -wk course on writing craft in small groups) and Writers Salons (free writes to prompts based on a weekly theme, with facilitated feedback).
Shelley presents writing and editing workshops at writers centres around Australia and Singapore, and at Writers Festivals — Byron Writers Festival and the Ubud Readers and Writers Festival where she’s run a workshop for the past 11 years.
She was Head of Macleay College’s Book Editing and Publishing Diploma for 27 years; she leads long and short coursesin Australia, Indonesia, Singapore. In the early 2000s Shelley, an active member of state and national editing societies was president of the NSW society 2000–‘03; and VP: ‘03–’06. She chaired committees for the Institute of Professional Editors (IPED), Australia.
